Giftophobia - Press Release
TORONTO (JULY 16, 2022) - Many issues have been exacerbated due to the pandemic, and not so surprisingly, Giftophobia is one of them.
Giftophbia, you might not heard of it. It is not a new phobia. It just has not been researched as much. It's not fear of gifts, but the fear, anxiety and confusion that comes with gift giving.
In a world with social media with influencers and every blog stating many different things as "the perfect gift"; it can be hard to find a gift that is not necessarily perfect but authentic and straight from the heart. It tends to be why individuals are consumed with fear and anxiety.
Gifts play an important part in our life in our relationships. Gifts can symbolize many things in a relationship, such as how well you know a person or how a relationship is. It shows how strong a bond can be between a gift giver and recipient and how connected you are.
In the book Unearthing, the “Gift” by GiftAFeeling, founder and CEO Vinayak Mahajan explained that gift-giving played a more important purpose in showing connection during the pandemic. A study conducted during the pandemic found that gift-giving, such as quarantine gift giving, was prosocial behaviour that fostered emotional wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic. It helped play an important part in community building, mental health, and wellbeing
during the pandemic.
Therefore, it's probably not surprising why Giftophbia is perhaps on the rise with individuals looking for the best gift not only for the individuals they care about, especially during a time when the community was still dealing with COVID-19.
Quote by CEO Vinayak Mahajan in the book Unearthing The “Gift”
“With globalization fully present in every facet of our lives and other external disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to connect through kind, thoughtful gestures have only amplified. Gift exchanges reveal how people think about others, what they value and enjoy, and how they build and maintain relationships. Gifting is something of utmost importance in rebuilding or watering the roots of the relationships post- COVID, during which people
mostly just connected virtually”.
